WHAT IS KARATE?
In education we often talk of the 3 R's: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. In Karate we talk about the 3 K's: Kihon, Kata and Kumite.
KIHON: This means Basics. The basics in karate are punches, kicks, blocks, strikes and stances. To build a strong foundation in karate, we must practice these basics constantly. Honing of the basic techniques is the essence of training and nee to be taken seriously in order to progress to a high level of skill.
KATA: This means Form. From is a sequence of movements put together in an overall pattern that must be memorized. Kata training includes elements of direction, technique, speed, power and rhythm. The analysis of Kata leads to the discovery of practical self-defense - hidden in the different forms are sequences to apply to different scenarios.
KUMITE: This means Partner Work or Sparring. Kumite introduces pre-arranged training drills to help us get used to different punches, kicks, blocks and strikes.
